Deskbike isn’t just a gimmick for solo workers or small offices. Some companies use hundreds of bikes to help staff stay active and alert.

Following a six-week pilot, Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile division bought around 1,000 desk bikes for their German offices. They even commissioned a study using the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) and the German Sport University Cologne.

According to the experts, 15 to 20 minutes at a stretch, two to three times a day, is the ideal amount for enjoyment and heightened mental activity. Deskbikes at T-Mobile

TRANSCRIPT: We have had the opportunity to use desk bikes at Deutsche Telekom for over a year now. I use one several times a day for 15 to 20 minutes which is the recommendation. When I know I need to engage in a lengthy phone call, for example, I automatically bring the desk bike to my desk and hope on. It’s not a strenuous workout, but it is healthy and it’s simply fun. In short, you could say that it’s very good for the cardio-vascular system and for the back and spinal discs as well.

In the beginning desk bikes were an oddity, but with time people have become perfectly used to typing and concentrating on work while using them. I think desk bikes are good for getting a little more exercise. And if I use one at least once a day, I don’t feel guilty at night if I didn’t move around a lot that day.
